RWE Gas Storage is finalising the construction work on UGS Třanovice, Phase 1 at UGS Tvrdonice has been completed

09 December 2011

The construction work for the expansion of the storage capacity of the Třanovice underground gas storage facility (UGS) will be completed at the beginning of 2012 together with landscaping in the central plant and testing of newly installed equipment. The capacity of UGS Třanovice will be more than doubled which will considerably contribute to higher levels of security and reliability of natural gas supplies to end customers not only in the North Moravian region and the Czech Republic but also in Europe.

“RWE Gas Storage is finalising one of its biggest ever investment projects. The comprehensive upgrade of the technology in Třanovice and expansion of the underground reservoir by connecting additional geological structures will result in 290 mcm of new storage capacity which will serve both Czech and European customers. We were able to commission 80 mcm of the new capacity and offer it to market participants in an electronic auction already in September of this year,” said Lubor Veleba, Managing Director of RWE Gas Storage, commenting on the successful course of the project, and and went on to add: “All newly developed storage capacity will be put into operation as of 1 April 2012.”

In related development, the first phase of construction work on the expansion of UGS Tvrdonice in South Moravia has been completed. RWE Gas Storage commissioned and sold a total of 65 mcm of new storage capacity in two electronic auctions in 2010 and 2011. The remaining new capacity planned for UGS Tvrdonice will be developed taking into account demand of market participants in the near future.

Both investment projects are generously supported by the European Union from the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR).
